Q: Sargur Plantation, Karnataka

The plantation at Nugu backwater at Sargur was raised after clearing natural growth, in violation of CAF guidelines.

Case Analysis

This 10-ha plantation at Sargur is one of two sites to compensate for the diversion of 20.40 ha of forest land for the construction of an irrigation tank in Nanjangud, Mysuru District. The total amount paid by GOI has not been reported on the e-Green Watch website.


The plantation at Nugu backwater at Sargur is a 5-year project that began in 2010. The budget of Rs 6,73,450 was spent to plant 17,600 trees (approximately 38 rs/tree). They report plans to plant 5 species but do not specify which.

Satellite Imagery Analysis

In 2005, there is natural growth visible on the plantation site. By February 2011, the natural growth is cleared and plantation is visible.
