N: Sunkadakallu Plantation, Karnataka

This site is meant to compensate for forest loss due to mining in Bellary district. Land previously under cultivation was fenced, and other land was cleared of natural growth to make way for a plantation.

Case Analysis

This 65-ha plantation at Sundkadakallu Reserve Forest is one of 18 plantation sites meant to compensate for the diversion of 196.46 ha of land for mining in Bellary district. The total amount paid by Tungabhadra Minerals Pvt Ltd is not reported.


This plantation has a budget of Rs 37,60,600 and proposed plantation of 104,640 saplings or approximately 35 rs per sapling. The species of the plants is not reported. This 7-year project began in 2010.


Satellite Imagery Analysis

Satellite imagery reveals natural growth and agriculture on the plantation site in October 2010. By March 2012, grids and bunts are visible on cleared and fenced land, with plantation being taken up after clearing the natural growth and displacing the agriculturalists.
