At this site, not only were agriculturalists displaced to make way for the plantation, there is no evidence that the trees survived and instead the land is being excavated. Yet, this is meant to 'compensate' for forest loss due to railway linkage.
Case Analysis
This 18-ha CA site is meant to compensate for the diversion of 8.72 ha of revenue forest in the same district for construction of a railway track linkage. The total amount paid by the user agency was 73,23,645 including net present value and compensatory afforestation. The amount paid for this site was not disclosed, but 5400 saplings of seven different species have been planted.
Satellite Imagery Analysis
The satellite imagery shows agricultural land between two dense forest patches in 2009. Plantation pits are visible on these agricultural lands in 2011. It is shocking to note that in 2016, almost half of the plantation site has been dug up, and there are no signs of any plants surviving.
Implications
Agriculturalists displaced
Failed plantation
Site is being dug up though land should be protected by Forest Conservation Act
