The site is in the middle of a densely populated area, with a history of agricultural land use since before 2007. How many cultivators have been displaced for this expensive plantation, in the name of offsetting deforestation caused by coal mining?
Case Analysis
The Juniwani Kala site is 32.32 hectares of revenue-land (non-forest) on which irrigated mixed plantation has been taken up as compensatory afforestation scheme. This site is one of two sites, totaling around 90 ha to compensate for nearly 190 ha of forest land diverted for open cast coal mining project by Prakash Industries Limited.
According to the Forest Department, a budget of Rs. 62,93,289 was utilized to plant 44,088 saplings from 14 species (142 rs/sapling). The 5-year project was started in 2011.
